Uloop: Tell us about yourself. How old are, how’d you get into making music?

KLOË: Hey! I’m Kloe! I’m 18 and I’m from Glasgow. I have an acoustic singer-songwriter background, so I started out gigging in and around Glasgow just me and an acoustic guitar. I started writing songs when I was 13. I taught myself how to play guitar one summer because I had just discovered Taylor Swift and wanted to be her, haha!

Uloop: Where did you draw your inspiration from for “Grip,” both in terms of lyrics and sound?

KLOË:  I think with “Grip”, I was listening to a lot of The 1975 and I loved how all of their songs were like social commentaries and so conversational. I think that’s what is really refreshing and relatable to me, as an 18-year-old girl experiencing lots of the things they write about. With “Grip”, it’s about a one night stand with someone I wanted more from. When writing it, the experience I was writing about was so fresh in my mind that the words just kind of fell out. I guess in a way I wanted to see how blatantly honest I could be in a song. I love it and I’m so proud of everything it has done – being so personal and 100% true to me as it is!

Uloop: What sort of sound can we expect from you in the future? How do you think “Grip” set the scene for your own sound?

KLOË: I think the KLOË sound bounces in between genres sonically which is definitely a true representation of my lyrical content – growing up, experiencing new things, love, drugs, heartbreak, etc. As people, we’re changing all the time, and for me as an 18-year-old – even more so. I think my music is true to that. Grip is definitely along the more dark and brooding (as a lot of people have called it) lines of what I do and it sets the tone of honesty.

Uloop: Tell us about your creative process while making music.

KLOË: It usually starts out with a phrase or a hook for me. I am always awkwardly whispering ideas into my voice notes. I’ll usually write a full song myself on piano or guitar then I’ll work on production ideas either myself or with others. With “Grip,” I started out with the lyrics and chords. I then took it to my friend Chris where we built production ideas around it before Lewis Gardiner added his amazing flare – and we had “Grip.”

Uloop: What does it feel like to have gained such buzz with “Grip”? Why do you think this track resonated so well with listeners?

KLOË: It feels really weird. I don’t know. I guess I don’t really feel like there is buzz, because it’s all happening to me. It almost feels like it’s all happening to another person and I’m just watching everything in the front row. I think it’s just seeing all the blog posts and messages from people who have found something in “Grip.” That’s what’s overwhelming. I never really thought about people connecting to my songs (as I’m a really selfish writer) so when I saw the response it was amazing. I guess it’s just relatability. I wrote about something real and people connected! It’s like thousands of people have read my diary.

Keep up with KLOË’s music on her SoundCloud.
