By Kristen Peuvion on February 12, 2015

Valentine’s Day can elicit feelings all over the emotional spectrum from people. This day dedicated to love is loathed by many, but also anticipated by others. The holiday seemingly splits the population into two groups of lovers and haters, but whatever feelings you may have towards Valentine’s Day, it’s coming up quickly!

Some of you lucky lovebirds out there probably already have a romantic date planned with your sweetie, and others of you are probably planning an anti-Valentine’s Day group date where you and your girlfriends chug a bit too many bottles of your favorite wine. Or maybe Valentine’s Day isn’t on your radar and you plan on having a normal Saturday night out with your friends.

Whatever your plans are, don’t let what you wear stress you out this Valentine’s Day! From the most low maintenance of celebrations (or lack thereof) to the most extravagant of dates, here’s your guide to the perfect Valentine’s Day outfit, no matter how you plan on celebrating.

For a Romantic Date Night

If you’re planning on a romantic date night this Valentine’s Day, you obviously want to look pretty for your significant other. After all, the day is all about celebrating your love for each other, so why not make your significant other’s jaw drop in something that’ll make you look and feel gorgeous?

Go for a show stopping dress in a pop of cherry red. There really is no better time to wear the color red. Plus, what girl doesn’t look good rocking a red hot dress?

Since the red dress is so loud, keep your accessories more subdued and neutral. You want to take your significant other’s breath away, not blind him by wearing every color under the sun.

Pair your dress with rose gold accessories and a blush colored coat. One look at you in this outfit and your date won’t know what hit ‘em!

For a Friend Date

A friend date is the perfect casual way to spend Valentine’s Day, so feel free to have your outfit reflect that. You don’t need any over the top, sexy dresses to impress your BFF; plus you’ll probably do something laid back like head to a movie.

So ditch the heels and opt for a pair of fun, patterned sneakers that are perfect for Valentine’s Day like these baby pink polka dotted Keds. Pair it with your favorite pair of jeans, or follow suit of the runway trends and try a denim skirt.

On top, wear a graphic tee with an on-trend bomber jacket like this Bria Varsity Bomber Jacket in grey. This outfit is the perfect, no-fuss look for a fun date with your best friend.

For an Anti-Valentine’s Day Celebration

An anti-Valentine’s Day celebration is all about celebrating your independence and not being tied down. If this is your chosen way to celebrate the holiday, wear an outfit that makes you happy and don’t worry about what anyone else thinks.

By this I mean that you should try out that hot new trend that you think might be a little out there, but you totally love it anyways. Or try mixing colors and patterns you would never try if you were trying to impress anyone else.

This is not to say that you should throw all caution to the wind and wear completely mismatched clothing or costume-like clothing, but wear something that you feel hot in and be a bit bolder than usual.

One idea for this celebration is a chic two-toned, color blocked outfit in pinks, reds or purples. This outfit from Teen Vogue would be perfect for the occasion. You’ll look chic and on-trend and this might not be something you would typically gravitate towards for a romantic date.

The color choice is bold because normally you might not think these colors match, but paired together in this way they look fabulous!

Another option is a blazer as a top with a pair of cropped pants, a la Anna Kendrick at this year’s Grammys. The look is sexy and fun, and also super stylish. It might be too much for a friend date, but for an anti-Valentine’s Day celebration you want to look and feel your sexiest and celebrate being all on your own.

For the Night In

Plenty of people loathe the time when Valentine’s Day rolls around and decide that they’re not going to go out at all and instead spend the night at home on the couch, snuggling a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates. That doesn’t mean you can’t get into the holiday at all, though.

If this is how you plan on celebrating, have some fun with it and throw on a pair of Valentine’s Day inspired pajamas! This heart matching pajama set from ASOS is super cute, but not over the top. Throw on your comfy slippers and head to the couch with your bottle of wine.

Whether you have big, extravagant plans with your significant other or you’re just planning a low key night in, your Valentine’s Day what to wear dilemma just got a lot easier. No matter what your plans are, these outfit ideas will have you looking your best!
