Artist To Watch: Alex Winston
If Alex Winston’s quirky voice doesn’t stop you in your tracks, then the coordinating contrast of her moody lyrics and vivacious pop sound will. As a multi-instrumentalist and classically-trained opera singer, she’s developed a sound that cuts through the clutter of the repetitive pop we’re flooded with.
Winston released her most recent single, “We Got Nothing,” this past January and it has the makings of an infectious pop anthem. Below is a quick Q&A with the “artist to watch.”
Uloop: Your single ”We Got Nothing” has received quite a bit of buzz since its release, and you haven’t had an album drop since King Con. Is this particular track the first of a few singles, or part of an EP or album? Can we expect some new Alex Winston music in 2015?
Alex Winston: My sophomore album is almost finished and will be out in mid 2015. I wanted to get something out as quickly as possible because of the wait, but the time allowed me to write a batch of songs I’m incredibly excited about.
Uloop: Your distinct voice and the fact that your music is a bit of a genre blender gives you an edge in the music industry. In general, what can we expect from your sound in the future? That same edge? Or maybe something different all together?
Alex Winston: I’ll always be trying new things and playing with the way I use my voice, but I think this batch of songs is indicative of a desire to blend pop melodies with different kinds of instrumentation. Sonically, I feel like it’s a more mature record than King Con. A bit more streamlined.
Uloop: As an artist, what are you looking to get out of your music? Are you looking for commercial success, are you hoping to inspire your fans, simply make music that you love, or all of the above?
Alex Winston: Obviously making music that I love comes first. You hope that when you’re true to that, fans and success will follow, but I don’t actively think about those things when I write.
Uloop: You have such an eclectic pop sound that we don’t hear very much these days; where do you get your inspiration from? How do you go from point A to point B when making music?
Alex Winston: I love the production side of building a song. When I write demos they are fleshed out down to the drum patterns and synth sounds before I go into the studio to record. I think that’s how I keep things genuine to my style. I do it myself and it sounds like me!
