The Benefits of Spending Spring Break at Home

It’s that time of year when college kids around the country are trading in their heavy winter coats for socks and sandals and washing away the ink stains and smell of coffee from late nights of studying for mid terms. Yes, it is time for that glorious week of Spring Break. No more having to peel yourself from bed to stumble to class, no more putting on that same pair of jeans for the fourth day in a row because mom isn’t around to handle that dreadful laundry, and most importantly, no more over-exertion of the brain for a whole week. A large majority of students are heading to Florida, Cancun or whatever tropical island is popular nowadays for a week of boozing, dancing and brainless entertainment. All of that is fine and dandy, but there are many benefits of just heading home to rest that overused college mind. So if you’re one of those smart students kicking back with a sandwich your mom just made you, continue reading about how intelligent you are. And if you’re out there “spring breaking” right now, continue reading about the reasons you should be home right now.

Keep your cash

Travelling is expensive. So is getting a hotel room, eating out every night, getting into parties, attending concerts, buying alcohol, removing unwanted drunken tattoos and bailing your buddy out of jail. None of those things will ever be an expense at home. Spring Break travel packages cost a lot of money, which is something college kids generally don’t have. A trip to Acapulco this year will set you back “only $999 per person.” Hey, compared to the $30 train ticket it cost me to get home, that isn’t too ba- wait, never mind. If your parents still like you, it’s pretty likely that they’ll provide you with food, shelter and a bed for free. What’s not to like about that? Spare your wallet, stay home.

Catch those Z’s

Being a full-time college student has its sacrifices. The one we have all experienced is that unfortunate lack of sleep. You can tell yourself that five hours a night is plenty to function, but that’s only if falling asleep during the walk to class, spelling your name wrong on an exam and calling your uncle to order a sub from Jimmy John’s is the definition of functioning. One of the main perks of going home for a week is being able to sleep in your own bed for a week. Literally the entire week. Okay maybe not, but no one will be judging you for sleeping in until two in the afternoon for a few days. Try doing that while surrounded by drunk co-eds yelling, “Spring break!!!” before taking a shot of tequila every five minutes.

Catch up with loved ones

College is a time when most students aren’t able to see their family as much as they would like. Everyone misses their mom sometimes, no matter how embarrassing or over-bearing she may be. And who doesn’t miss their sweet, little grandma? Heck, you may even find yourself wondering how that third cousin twice-removed that you saw on Christmas that one time is doing amidst a disorientating night of studying. Your family loves and misses you while you’re away getting an education, and they deserve some face time here and there. That nameless chick who you just did a body shot off of doesn’t care about you. Your grandma does, though. Stay home and let her bake you a pie.

The most important reason of all

There is absolutely no chance that you will encounter Nick Cannon if you just stay home for Spring Break this year. For those unlucky students who made the trip to Nassau this March, you do not have the same luxury. I am terribly sorry about that, it’s too bad you aren’t sitting on your couch binge-watching True Detective in a pile of pizza crumbs instead.

No matter how you spend your Spring Break, I’m sure it will be better than going to class and taking tests and all that disgusting stuff. But to squeeze the maximum amount of joy out of this short week, I recommend just chilling at home. For those of you that did, I commend you. So while your peers are out there jumping around and sweating on each other in Mexico, sit back, relax and enjoy some well-deserved relaxation that only home, sweet home can provide.
