Should Gun Control Be Stricter?

By Da Yeon Eom on June 14, 2016

Christina Grimmie, a singer from “The Voice,” was reported dead on June 10 after being shot with a gun at one of her autograph signings. The tragic event of a 22-year-old talented singer issued mourning from everyone who knew and loved her. She will be missed as her youthfulness, and charming personality, has been abruptly swept away from the world.

Another unfortunate incident occurred two days after. Terror in the form of gun violence took place at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Approximately 50 people have been killed, and numerous others have been injured while fleeing the area. The incident has been referred to as the worst mass shooting case in the history of the United States.

The most popular debate after the two incidents is about whether the access to a gun is too available or not. Some would argue that stricter gun control could have helped to avoid such tragedies. They voice that by failing to have harsher regulations on the matter of accessing guns, the government has allowed such episodes to take place.

However, it seems unlikely that those who have committed the crimes would have given up on their plans to murder because they lacked weapons. Christina Grimmie’s killer possessed two handguns and a hunting knife. If the guns had failed, he would have alternative means of accomplishing his mission.

In the midst of massacre in Orlando, the terrorist threatened to bomb the nightclub when the police force had arrived. With such intense emotions and senseless actions, choice of weapon is hardly a red light to disengage the radicals from carrying out their quests.

The root of the two seemingly separate issues is the irrational violence that takes place too often in society. One person’s hatred can cause so many heartaches with lasting consequences in the lives of the victims’ families and communities that they were once part of. Events such as these show the ill nature of hate crimes that often fail to be treated properly to prevent similar misfortunes in the future.

Instead of pointing fingers to blame and finding reasons to cause divisions, we should first and foremost grieve with the victims’ families. And find ways to help the survivors by supplying whatever they need to recover from the trauma. Then, society should anticipate hindering future similar occurrences of hateful crimes by uniting to resolve the existing barriers between sex, race, and religion, to conquer terrorism.
