Best Upcoming Spring Concerts At Colleges Around The Nation
With springtime comes nice weather, and with that comes the start of outdoor concerts and music festivals across the country.
There are of course the more well known music festivals, such as Coachella (short for Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival) located in Indio, California, which takes place the second and third weekends in April.
Later on in the summer are those music festivals like Bonaroo, which takes place in Manchester, Tennessee from June 11-14; Spring Awakening, at Chicago’s Soldier Field on the weekend of June 12; Vans Warped Tour, taking place at various locations throughout the U.S. at the beginning of July; and Chicago’s Lollapalooza, on the last weekend in July or first weekend in August.
Aside from major music festivals that begin to take place as the weather becomes more and more bearable, there are also spring concerts and festivals held at colleges and universities throughout the nation worth mentioning.
1. Timeflies and B.o.B at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Timeflies, an American music duo from Boston who plays music under the pop, hip-hop, electronic and dance genres and rapper B.o.B will headline the University’s first ever Spring Jam concert on April 26 at 2 p.m. on the Main Quad.
This outdoor concert, put together by the University’s student-run organization Star Course, will be free for students who show their ID upon entry.
2. Springfest at the University of Southern California
Taking place on April 4, Springfest, put on by the USC Concerts Committee, showcased big name artists such as 2 Chainz, Portugal., The Man, and Audio Push.
In the past, it has had DJ Diplo, Big Sean, and other big names.
3. Slope Day at Cornell University
Slope Day is the University’s way of celebrating the final break from winter and introduction to warm weather. In doing so, the students meet in the middle of campus for a big concert on usually the last day of regular undergraduate classes.
Taking place on May 7, the headliner is Chance the Rapper, featuring MAGIC!
4. Last Day of Classes (LDOC) at Duke University
This music festival, which is exactly what it sounds like, provides a way for students to celebrate the end of their semesters of hard work by attending a concert with major names in music.
This year, T-Pain and Jeremih will headline, and other artists will include DJ Spencer Brown and MisterWives. Sounds like a great way to end the semester to me.
5. Rites of Spring Music Festival at Vanderbilt University
It makes perfect sense that a school like Vanderbilt, located in Music City, would have a spring music festival for its students. Taking place April 16-18, Rites of Spring will include huge names in music like T-Pain, Chance the Rapper, Portugal., The Man, and Young the Giant.
There is also Battle of the Bands happening on Thursday and Friday of the festival, shortly after doors open.
6. Sun God Festival at the University of California, San Diego
This music festival’s proceeds go toward FM 94/9’s “About the Music” project, which helps to fund musical education in schools in the San Diego area. The 2015 lineup includes big artists including Snoop Dogg, OK GO, and STRFKR.
Taking place on Sunday, May 3, the festival should be a refreshing and entertaining option for UCSD students to enjoy the end to the semester.
7. Tigerfest at Towson University
The University’s annual music festival definitely brings hype to Baltimore, MD. With past headliners like Wiz Khalifa, this festival is what gives Towson a reputation, and what excites students the most about their university.
8. Round Up Weekend at the University of Texas at Austin
This annual, 72-hour long festival allows the University’s sororities and fraternities to host numerous local, and big name musicians for concerts for the student body to enjoy. Proceeds go directly toward the Greek Life’s philanthropy.
9. #Fest at Ohio University
Students at Ohio University welcome this music festival as a weeklong celebration of the end of the semester. With past headliners such as Kendrick Lamar and Steve Aoki, the festival is a pretty big deal.
Taking place on April 18, the lineup will include performances by Diplo, Schoolboy Q, and ILoveMakonnen.
