5 Reasons Illini Love Dads Weekend

By Christina Oehler on November 10, 2014

The dynamic of your relationship with your parents when you get to college changes; they are no longer the disciplinary force in your life; they are your best friends. You stop trying to escape them like you did in high school and you realize you look forward to those daily phone conversations from your mom and those funny texts from your dad.

College makes you realize how great these people have been your whole life- and how much greater it is when you can party with them. Dads Weekend is the annual time for dads to relive their college experience, and without further ado, here are some of the reasons we all love Dads Weekend at U of I.

An Excuse to Actually go to the Game

Obviously our football team is less than impressive, but I think all Illini could admit we envy those schools with crazy football games. Dads Weekend is the one time when it’s completely socially acceptable to go to the football game and cheer your heart out for your school. Your dad will love being able to see a cheap football game and you’ll finally get the chance to pull out that dusty Illinois sweatshirt you got and never actually wore.

Finally- An Illinois Tailgate!

As Illini, we are blessed and cursed when it comes to pregaming our football games. “Block” is unique to Illinois and is a fun way to see all your friends in one place, but we all love the fact that Dads Weekend means tailgates with quality booze. It’s a chance to eat burgers for breakfast before the game and watch your dad play drinking games with your friend’s fathers. Nothing quite like a little role reversal to really get a party going.

 Off-Campus Dining

I know I don’t only speak for myself on this one, because every Dads Weekend my father and I make it a goal to try all of the amazing foodie places that downtown Champaign and Urbana have to offer. Destihl, Kofusion and Seven Saints are only a few of the most famous C-U eats, and after a long day of cheering on your team and giving your dad the annual grand tour of campus, you’ll be dying to eat something that isn’t on Green street.

Seeing Your Dad Let Loose

Dads Weekend means seeing a side of your dad you never knew existed. Your father, surrounded by the energy of college life, is likely to fit right in with your twenty-something friend group because after all, he’s reliving his college days. After the initial shock of the bar scene wears off, they’ll likely be asking you to make plans for next year’s Dads Weekend.

Quality Bonding Time

You had plenty of time to fish, bike and do whatever else you and your father did to bond when you were younger. Regardless of whether your siblings are there or if it’s just you and your old man, there is a different dynamic to spending time with just your dad. He is one of the most fun, good natured people in the world (once you’re out of your angsty teen years) and you won’t get too many chances later in life to spend an entire weekend partying with your father.
